New chapter. Retired from cutting hair for 35 years. Went through prostate cancer, a year of treatment and the aftermath of recovery. Came out with a different perspective on life.
Thankfully, I had an amazing partner, and some supportive friends, one in particular. Still, it took another year and a half to come to terms with the whole ordeal. But I was lucky to have an MD who is incredible at his work, passionate to fight cancer, and leave his patients with the best possible outcome. Kudos to Dr. Dattoli at his center in Sarasota, Florida.
Now to get to creating images from my unique life experiences.
Most of the images currently posted are in a mixed media format...using watercolors, watercolor pencils and wax crayons, oil pastels, ink, iridescent ink, and regular pastels. Some of my older work was done using oil and egg tempera paintings on Masonite. I loved the layered effects that the medium afforded.
When my asthma escalated, it became impossible to use the aromatics involved with painting in that manner, but I became addicted to the effects of layering.
This led me to experiment with all types of layering of the different tools that did not bother my breathing.
With the breathing issue seemingly abated, I am encouraged to resurrect my preferred method of creating images, using egg tempera and oil.
Always being a high energy person, a friend, 60 years ago, gave me a box of oil paints and some canvas. He said, paint, use some of that energy to create! He didn't know that an art teacher in grade school had discouraged me from drawing. My images were not anything she appreciated. I took that box, and never stopped creating.
There were some formal classes here and there, most of which happened at the University of New Mexico, where I studied basic art, etching etc. But most of my education occurred in Rochester N.Y., when I took classes at a place called All of Us. Phillip Jacobson was teaching a renaissance technique called oil and egg tempera. Another teacher there, Carl Zimmerman, taught drawing. I have these two men to thank for setting me on the road I currently am travelling.

This is the best photo I could get. Over all, the colors are a bit more saturated, especially the background. This was also made into a card size.

Watercolor stick, pen and ink and color pencil on dark purple paper.....this one has a ding in the lower right corner...character!!! Also, the image is darker than in the photo. I think the watercolor stick is a bit reflective.
